is reason good enough?

it doesnt matter that way- the sound is good enough. its phat sound actually.
the sequencer sucks. there is not audio editing really... but i would say that logic has not proper audio editing either... cubase is the best for audio editing.... but some logic fx sound really nice. and the es2 sounds very nice. ultrabeat is like a band in a box...

i will say this- its better to render your reason to audio and NOT use rewire. rewire is total shit for sound quality and basically forces realtime calculation and a very small pipe for sound. its priority is synchronization over sound quality- its more a live thing - in terms of what they were thinking i guess... render to audio and then import to cubase or logic or protools or whatever...

virus and nord and all that hardware "virtual analog" well i think most vsti's/au's sound better (cleaner) and phatter and actually these kind of synths are old technology...

bottom line- its not about the gear or software- its how you use it.
learn how to use it. really use it. dont use presets and dont use 5 eq's and 3 compressors- try to use one eq with subtractive eq settings and use a single compressor or limiter to get the right dynamic... (there are exceptions of course- for a certain effect...)

anyway i hear this sort of stuff since 15 years and its boring... blah blah blah

um this is the music production forum.

if you make different music production threads for fullon, for proggy, for dark, then you are only creating the same thing over and over again.

these categories are not real- and not really descriptive of the music that exists now.
make your own music.

about the production - well its all the same from hiphop to trance... same teknix

sure- any synth with fast envelopes works fine.

thats why people sometimes use sampled basses- to make the attack part of the envelope more tight.

hey... :)
I will agree with ocelot (man i love ur kicks :P) on the reason/rewire thing..
Currently using good old logic dog 551.. and still wishing for a F*# mac :)
And some experiments with cubase.. but i dunno.. I m stack with logic -
some tunez of mine are on my page..

Have fun all!

there are a lot of technical details one might go on and on but the question will always be if the others do understand what he means.. i mean it is difficult to discuss when the level of knowledge differs a lot..
i would recommend to check the techinque page on http://www.panpapason.com where u can find loads of full on trance techniques ranging from programming a synth sound to kicks hatz and basses..
I also do believe that "Trance Experience" PDF or DVD is a must for mixing and production insights..!!
as for what i like: i def like both worlds, the analogue and digital and i do make sure to use both in my tracks. There are advantages on both worlds so why not?... as for what is my fav plug in, depends the instance.. i think the best way to work around the studio is to have various tools that they dedicate to diferent tasks.. please check: http://www.algorithmix.com/en/kstereo.htm Bob Katz(one of the daddies in mastering&mixing fields) has created this new algorithm plugin that does magic.. i think it is great when u don't know what exactly to do to your bus channel or master channel.. it will just make things sound round and phat...

anyway please do not forget "trance experience" there is no reason if u read the book why not make a decent track!!!!

Hi everyone,

thanks for the forum, found lots of interesting posts here recently...everyone has their own way of working, .... so here is what works for me

for me its the buttons, knobs, keys, pads, faders .... everything you can twist, hit and touch with your fingers for that certain "hands on" feeling. i think it's a very organic and intuitive way of working, specially if you have some kind of musical background...
i drastically reduced the use of vst/au's from hundreds to just a few dozens, no need for 50 analog subtractive synth emulations, 20 samplers, etc... nice to have some esoteric stuff like granular synthesizers and wavetable-based ones and some sound mangling FX, but in my opinion " less is more " , just learn how to use the shit properly! there is no shame in reading a manual every now and then, in fact you have to, if you wanna make sound "out of the box", away from just preset-switching... if you don't wanna learn about harmonies, scales, rhythms,... fair enough, nowadays it's not nesessarily a pre-requisite to making certain types of music. but sequencers and synths (but also a mixing desk and CDJ's) are musical instruments that have to be studied and practised to create decent results...

personally, i believe in a healthy mix of software and hardware, but my emphasis is "hands on"! luckily the boundaries between virtual and hardware are slowly disappearing ... there are software controllers amass nowadays, and relatively cheap as compared to the equipment you needed just a few years back... and some nice "hybrids" between soft-and hardware have cropped up... (get the "KORE PLAYER" from native instruments!!! free and legal download from www.native-instruments.com. BUT: requires some studying.... basically it's a new approach to handling lots of plugin's...)
if you don't wanna/can't get external synths, you should at least use some MIDI-device to twist and tweak parameters, try to "touch the sound" with your hands, not just with the mouse! the ones of you who were lucky enough to study an instrument know what i am talking about... actually "playing" the stuff, not just programming... (painting a bunch of dots in your seq...) it's a lot of fun, and it's one of the most trippy experiences ever..., hit, twist, punch and tweak about on things to create sound... what ever style of music you make, the creation itself is a trance-like feeling, meditation, bliss... that will reflect in the music!

happy creating to all of you.... thorsten

well said Thorsten...hands on is the key.. our scene will have a lot better music if the artists would spend more time on creativity other than downloading... some people are hesitating to seek the unknown and are happy to use a preset that is known to work... they are more creative than they think for themselves definitely.. but they need to recognize that.. all humans are creative they just need to find their field... so one might be on the fx proccesing and other on the sound synthesis or the harmonic progressions and so on... so hands on !!

atc-1 def a nice little number
